What made you choose to join the Abertay University Law Society?

I joined the AULS committee in 2021 in my first year, to connect with like-minded individuals and make new friends! I was also very excited about the prospect of attending the range of academic and social events that the law society organises.

What made you pursue a career in law?

I decided to pursue a career in law because it offers exciting professional prospects that will allow me to continuously learn and grow. The legal field is always developing, presenting a challenge, which I happen to love! Most importantly, though, being a lawyer means upholding justice, fairness and equality in society; something which I am very passionate about.

What areas of law are you most interested in or passionate about?

The areas of law that am I most interested in change daily! I am currently highly enjoying the law of evidence/criminal law, however I am also interested in human rights law, particularly women’s rights, especially in the context of UK employment. Many areas of the law tie in together, so it is hard to pick one without some aspect of another coming into play. I do see myself working for the Crown Prosecution Service, though!

How has being a member of the Abertay University Law Society enhanced your academic and professional journey in the field of law?

Not only has being able to make friends expanded my professional network, but making friends for life through joining AULS has encouraged me to say “yes” to more opportunities. Since joining AULS, I have had the courage to apply for prestigious placements, work in a fast-paced law firm, meet top lawyers and even travel to London for a conference on the benefits of pro-bono work. None have this would’ve been possible without the opportunities arising from our brilliant community and having the contacts to hear about them. Furthermore, through the stream of academic events, I have learned things you don’t usually learn in the classroom; for example, law in practice by watching the Dundee Sheriff Court proceedings, day-in-the-life of a lawyer through the Brodies LLP office trip, learning how to network in workshops, and much more. Overall, I would say my experience as a member of AULS has truly enhanced my university experience and has given me the opportunity to stand out from the crowd!
