What made you choose to join the Alternative Society?

I actually founded the society! After experiencing the amazing community in Swansea Uni's Heavy Metal Society, I wanted to create a similar welcoming space for alternative students at Abertay. There's something special about having a place where everyone can be themselves

What does "alternative" mean to you, and how do you express it in your life?

Alternative means staying authentic to yourself and finding a community of likeminded people! I really believe in creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels comfortable being themselves, whatever form that takes.

What's your favourite alternative subculture, and what do you love about it?

I'm primarily a metalhead, but I have a deep appreciation for the goth scene too. Being into metal gives you the perfect excuse to drag your mates to countless live gigs, mosh until you're covered in bruises, and get into friendly debates about whether Deftones still counts as nu-metal...

What's a piece of alternative media (music, film, art, ect) that had a major impact on you?

Pantera's 'Vulgar Display of Power' was my gateway into metal. My parents were ravers, but my mum had this special love for Pantera. She passed down that CD like it was a holy grail, and I played it until it started skipping. That album really set me on my path into alternative culture.

If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future, and why?

I'd go back to 1996 in a heartbeat! It was an incredible year for alternative culture - Type O Negative's 'October Rust' dropped, Pantera released 'The Great Southern Trendkill', and Sepultura blessed us with 'Roots'. Plus, it was the first year of Ozzfest, and 'Scream' hit theaters. I'd give anything to experience all of that firsthand!

What's your favourite board game or video game, and what makes it so enjoyable for you?

Metal Gear Solid 3, without a doubt. The Metal Gear series is the greatest video game series of all time - I'll die on that hill! I'm a diehard Revolver Ocelot fan, and the game's blend of stealth, story, and style is unmatched.

If you could have any superpower for a day, what would you choose and how would you use it?

I'd steal Spider-Man's powers in a heartbeat. They might not be the flashiest, but web-swinging through a city just looks like the most fun you could possibly have. It's the perfect balance of abilities - though I'll definitely pass on the Parker luck!
