Name: Heather McAlpine
Course: Biomedical Science
Year: 2nd
What made you choose to join the Biomedical Science Society?
I decided to join the society as I wanted to interact and connect with other likeminded students following a similar path to me, also to gain knowledge and experience in activities that compliment my coursework.
What initially sparked your interest in Biomedical Science, and what aspects of the field do you find most fascinating or rewarding?
During my school years I had firsthand laboratory experiences than sparked my interest back then, I had also always found biology class was a personal favourite of mine, especially human anatomy. These on top of personal encounters with healthcare all inspired my interest with Biomedical Science.
The ability to impact people’s lives is what excites me mostly about this career path. It would be very rewarding to be capable to help in any improvements in both medical research and public health.
How does being part of the Biomedical Science Society enhance your understanding and passion for the field?
Joining the Biomedical Science Society provides a platform to network with both professionals and peers who are enthusiastic like myself. These networking opportunities can hopefully lead to mentorship etc. Participating in the society also gives me a chance to work on my organisation skills which will be vital for personal and professional growth as I progress throughout and after my studies. The society has advanced my passion to work in the healthcare field.
If you could have any superpower for a day, what would you choose and how would you use it?
Flight or super speed so I can cut back the time travelling to Abertay during the rush period, also because time management isn’t my forte 😊
If you could live in any fictional world, which one would it be and why?
I would choose to live in the world of Avatar: The last Airbender. I would love to have the ability to master all the elements – water, fire, air and earth. The gorgeous settings and landscapes in the world, the side quests always seemed like fun. Of course flying on Appa, the sky bison is top of the list.
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you want to have with you?
3 things isn’t enough but its got to be my kindle (with full charge preferably), a water purifying system so I don’t dehydrate and a first aid kit (I’m terribly clumsy).
